The United Nations General Assembly designated May 3 World Press Freedom Day.  The purpose of World Press Freedom Day is to demonstrate the critical nature of a free and independent press and to remind governments of their obligations to ensure free speech in their respective societies.  Free speech and freedom of expression are in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

I attended a World Press Freedom Day event on May 5, 2014.  I requested a moment of silence for members of the press who lost their lives in the line of duty.
